Variable Depth Sonar Handling System |
The Parkburn Precision Handling Systems non-magnetic variable depth sonar (VDS) system is utilised with the Thomson
Marconi Sonar 2093 VDS installed on the UK Sandown class single role minehunters. This system is also deployed on ships of
the Australian, Japanese, Korean and Saudi Arabian navies.
The handling system includes an integral water glycol high efficiency
hydrostatic transmission system. The use of a hydrostatic drive system minimises the fluid cooler requirements. The water
glycol fluid eliminates any fire hazards associated with the hydraulic fluid.
The system can be employed with other sonar types and variants with larger cable storage barrels and direct electric motor
drive can also be supplied.
The cable handling system stores and deploys the sonar towed body combined
strain/electrical umbilical cable. All control of the system is by the VDS sonar computer system. A secondary local control console
is provided for emergency operation plus a manual wind capability for retrieval of the towed body in case of total power failure.
An integral slip ring is incorporated to transfer the power and all data between the sonar control system and the towed body.
To monitor the tension and deployed length of the cable, a separate instrumented sheave is provided. The total cable handling system
status is continuously monitored and transmitted to the sonar control computer. |
