Capstan Drum Engines have been engineered to lay and recover cables at speeds
up to 8 knots with breakout tensions of up to 45 tonnes. The systems deployed
offer a wide range of options, to meet specific customer requirements.
Fleeting Rings
Fleeting rings (Pick up and Pay out) provide the maximum support to the cable
during fleeting, reducing fleeting stresses and thus protecting the cable and
enabling greater laying or pick up speeds to be achieved compared with the standard
fleeting knife arrangement. Continuous laying speeds of 8 knots can be achieved
using fleeting rings and a drum low friction bearing design.
Accurate Tension Measurement
Integral Load Sensing Measurement automatically enables accurate measurement of cable
tension during all cable laying and repair tasks in normal sea states.
Electrical Drive Systems (DC or AC) enable the cable machinery performance characteristics
to be tuned to meet specific operator requirements in terms of response and sensitivity.
It provides fine speed and tension control and is a more energy efficient means of using
the ships available electrical power.
Low Outboard Tensions
Low Tension Render Capability automatically drives one or more of the drum engine motors with
just sufficient power to overcome the drum engines internal friction characteristics and draw
off/hold back load, thus allowing laying with very low outboard tensions.

The Drum Engine and Draw Off-Hold back unit are 100% synchronised
through the control system to minimise the risk to the cable.
Advanced self-contained, closed loop hydraulics and an oil filled common
gearbox for all drum engine motors provide a system characterised by low
noise and high reliability.
Mounted on linear bearings, accurate tension readings are obtained via the
load-cells. This sensitive control system automatically reduces the drive
unit's torque at low outboard tensions. Cable Handling equipment does not get
any more sophisticated than this.
